Overview

The “Wieliczka” Salt Mine is one of the most valuable monuments of material and spiritual culture in Poland and is product of multiple generations of miners who hand-carved it from blocks of salt. Suffice to say, this subterranean world of pits, tunnels and huge rooms have to be seen to be believed!

The first tourist trail in Wieliczka was established as early as at the turn of the 19th century and a few hundred years later the salt mine was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1978).

The historic Wieliczka Salt Mine is the only site in the world where mining have been continued since the Middle Ages Lying on nine levels, its original excavations (longitudinals, traverses, chambers, lakes, as well as lesser and major shafts) stretch for a total of 300 kilometres reaching the depth of 327 meters and illustrate all the stages of the development of mining technology over time - – the quotation from September 8th 1978, when Wieliczka Salt Mine, along with 11 other sites from all over the world, joined the UNESCO’s very first World Heritage list.
